Well, I counted L. Olivier, so I think that counts as dead. In that vein, I'd add Ingrid Bergman, not because she's was a transformational actress, but because she excited my male bits.

Casablanca. Oh ... my ... God.

Cate Blanchett. And if we're counting dead people, Claude Rains.

I am generally oblivious to the existence of Jeremy Irons, but I can see the appeal. And I totally share the Malkovich love.

"Thespianosity" is a great work. I must remember to use it early and often.

I tend to like actors who can and do transform. The ones who live off their personalities are OK. Some better than others. But the ones who transform are, to me, the real artists. With that said, a partial list (in no particular order) would include:

Russell Crowe (Yep. His work in "The Insider" and "A Beautiful Mind" get him onto my list.)

Lawrence Olivier (I swear there were films I saw that I didn't even know he was in until the credit came up)

Anthony Hopkins

Johnny Depp (He took breathtaking risks in "Pirates")

Gene Hackman

Meryl Streep (Watch "Sophie's Choice" and "Silkwood" back to back)

Ed Norton (lots of potential)

Sean Peann (doesn't transform as often as many others, but has done it, and his intensity when needed is amazing)

Charlize Theron

Dustin Hoffman (but not for his recent work, in which he seems to be just phoning it in)

I'm sure there are many I've missed, but that's a pretty good start.

Based solely on thespianosity, and choosing only from among the living, what are some performances you admire? Or actors, or both, if consistency allows.

Well ... just speaking for me (and who else could I speak for) I like actors who make strong choices, brilliantly conceived, and play those choices well. So, my tastes will probably not quite match yours, but then, Jeremy Irons does nothing for my girl bits.
