Oh, and for the record

George Clooney was robbed. Jesus. Want some eggs with that ham, Mr. Day-Lewis?

  1. Didn’t see Danial Day Lewis’ performance, so I can’t comment on it vs. Clooney’s. Having said that, I did see Clooney’s and didn’t find anything particularly remarkable about it. I thought it was the basic leading-man-does-leading-man-stuff role, as far as I could tell.

I would have put Depp’s performance ahead of Clooney’s, personally.

  2. Poop. Depp did nothing particularly unique with the role; I thought Helena Bonham-Carter was much more impressive.

Georgie, on the other hand, dropped his usual aren’t-I-a-card smirk (I think the Coen brothers may have a trademark on this) and delivered an understated performance perfectly in sync with the feel and aesthetic of the entire film… and I’m not a George Clooney fan, really. Maybe that’s why I liked it so much.

  3. Unfortunately, Helena Bonham-Carter was compared unfavorably to Angela Lansbury, who did the role on B’Way. It’s really not fair, since the concepts were quite different, so Lansbury was able to play the thing for more laughs.

I actually am a Clooney fan in the way that I am a Gregory Peck fan. Clooney does important work, and takes huge chances (“O Brother, Where Art Thou” comes to mind). But I didn’t think Peck was a great actor, though he was a very good one and had a manner that made him just right for “Mockingbird.” And I don’t think Clooney is a great actor, but does what he does very well.

I agree that Depp didn’t do anything so enormously special that he blew me away in this one. But I still thought it was better than Clooney.

    So, sue me ;-) .

  4. Depp, schmepp.
